The example activities are a small translated selection of the activity guides collected and developed by Natural Technology,

showcasing the use of technology in nature with children and teenagers.

Orienteering for Food with Vild Mad

Plan an outdoor orienteering race in which participants win food ingredients and use the foraging app Vild Mad to find edible plants in the area for spicing up their final meal.

Field Investigations with Seek by iNaturalist

Seek by iNaturalist was developed as a child accessible version of the iNaturalist app. In this activity, participants perform a "bioblitz" of an area close to the school and discuss the biodiversity of the area.

What Grows There?

In this activity, students use plant identification apps and journals to investigate plant life and growth over the course of 6 weeks.

Outdoor Task Races with TeachOUT

This is a guide to TeachOUT, an app for creating educational outdoor task races in science subjects. Instructors can create task stations and add content to the stations remotely, setting up the task race in advance. Possible activities include treasure hunts, questions, photo and drawing challenges, and more.

Learn about Local Birds

Use bird identification apps to record birdsong and learn about local birds during a walk. Organize theme days to learn more about particular bird species you met on your way.

Survey a Local Area

Participants will use a variety of apps to survey and describe a local area, including its proportions, typical weather conditions, plant and animal life, etc.. They will present their findings and a "model" of the area to each other in groups.

Introduction to Geocaching

Learn about the basics of finding and creating geocaches, or digital treasure hunts.

Leaf Creature E-Book

Use leaves, twigs and rocks to create a special creature. Create a story about the creature using Book Creator and share with others!

Explore Outside with a Metal Detector

Whether it's amateur archaeology, cleaning up trash or investigating the makeup of various objects, a metal detector can be used to a wide variety of activites. Read more here.

About the Activities

The activities present ideas and inspiration for incorporating technology into education to learn more about nature. They focus on the use of citizen science and registration apps (with the exception of TeachOUT) and are most appropriate for older children and teenagers.
